Who doesn’t enjoy having lunch “in a real garden”—right? Sherman Library and Gardens is a 2.2 acre gem located right in the heart of Corona Del Mar/Newport Beach. The plantings and flowers are so inspiring to me…this little home gardener. As I meander through the wonderful walkways and acreage I see new things at every turn. The Koi pond with three darling turtles is always a highlight for me. Sherman Gardens offers such creative events throughout the year, based on seasonal holidays and plantings. I have been a member for over twenty years.
The on-site restaurant is called “608 Dahlia Restaurant” and is a real treat.
Guests find themselves with a front row seat offering panoramic views of the Central Garden and the sounds of nature and water gently splashing in the nearby elegant fountain.
I hope this Video will transport you to the Gardens and the cuisine you might enjoy if you have the pleasure to visit.
Everything I have ever ordered is simply delicious—and each entrée seems to dance on the plate! The Gardeners work with Executive Chef/Owner Jessica Roy to create an herb garden for clippings to be use in her kitchen. She also has quite a green thumb when it comes to edible flowers which are a signature feature of her plating. Each salad and entrée is full of color, fresh vegetables, produce and glistening with a complex cuisine profiles. Working with seasonal ingredients, there is always something new to enjoy. I can hardly wait for the summer-time squash blossoms to return. On my last visit, I enjoyed the Leek and Mushroom Quiche with a tasty green salad. Their house made soups are always a hit. The Salmon is another fave and my lunch guest enjoyed the Filet of Trout with roasted veggies and pureed potatoes. But first—do order a batch of their buttermilk, chive and Gruyere biscuits. They are a delicious start! They do serve beer, wine, champagne, prosecco and seasonal wine cocktails as well.
Chef Jessica took over the restaurant from her mentor Pascal Olhats who previously ran the Café Jardin restaurant on that site for many years. She had worked with him for a number of years and the transition has been seemless. Jessica has certainly put her own stamp and style on this special spot.
The Restaurant is open Wednesday – Sunday, from 11:00am to 2:00pm. There is a $5 admission fee to the Gardens for non-members when dining at the restaurant. Members can bring guests to dine for a reduced admission. Reservations are highly recommended.
