(The lunch described in this article was kindly hosted by restaurant owner Pascal Olhats. Thank you Pascal!)

My friend and Chef, Pascal Olhats is the Owner of Pascal’s a lovely restaurant in San Juan Capistrano. By day it is a charming café with dine in, or to go offerings—from quiche to sandwiches and salads, to complete meals. Pastries are made on-site each morning. Then in the evening, there is wine by the glass or bottle, a complete dinner menu for dine in or to go ordering. Then Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings guests are in for a real treat with Pascal right there serving a formal Prix Fixe menu beginning at 6:00pm.

During the day the options are endless…

The other day our writing group was welcomed to his lovely restaurant. The International Food Wine and Travel Writers Association (IFWTWA) had our SoCal Regional Meeting here and we were treated like kings and queens!   Here was our fabulous menu:

The appetizers included:

-Petite onion tart and pesto tomato tartelettes which paired perfectly with the white wine being served.

-Assiette of housemade pistachio country pate and pork rillette, duck saucisson with housemade mustard and pickles from local, farm-picked cucumbers

The next course was…

-Salade Lyonnaise. A Classic French Salad with Butter Lettuce, Frisee, Smoked Bacon Lardons & Poached Farm Egg with a Dijon Mustard Dressing.

-Seabass au Thyme. Pascal’s Specialty Chilean Seabass with Thyme Crust, Seafood Chardonnay Sauce and sitting on a bed of Tomato Concasse. The sauce had hints of mussels and shrimp and was divine!

-“Macanese” egg tart with berry compote. Recipe adapted from a Macau celebrity chef’s original “secret” creation when Pascal visited Macau as a guest Chef. (Per Wikipedia, Macau (also spelled Macao) is an autonomous region on the south coast of China, across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong. A Portuguese territory until 1999, it reflects a mix of cultural influences. It has giant casinos and malls on the Cotai Strip, which joins the islands of Taipa and Coloane and has earned it the nickname, “the Las Vegas of Asia.” One of its more striking landmarks is 338m-high Macau Tower, with sweeping city views.)

Elegant Dining at Pascal’s Restaurant

(The lunch described in this article was kindly hosted by restaurant owner Pascal Olhats. Thank you Pascal!)

Discovering Two Unique Wine Bars in La Jolla… You Just Gotta Try Them!

Our International Food Wine & Travel Writers Association (IFWTWA) gathered a small group in the charming seaside town of La Jolla to make an introduction to two wonderful wine bars. Both are doing things is a new and different way. These are NOT your parent’s wine bars. We first stopped at We Olive & Wine Bar along Prospect Street in the bustling, upscale downtown area of La Jolla Village. Parking can be a challenge, so good luck with that. You might have to hoof it a few blocks,...

Exploring Petite Wines With Big, Robust Flavors

On a recent summer Sunday afternoon, I found myself transported to a lush, tropical garden. The shimmering pool and greenery welcomed us with open arms. I was in for a big treat as a newbie guest---- joining the Wine Council for their summertime gathering. Exploring fine wines, paired with delicious cuisine and of course, wonderful company---what's not to like about that line up!

Robin and Marc Simpson were our incredible hosts. And we all know how much work that is to have company and be...

A Perfect 3-Day Getaway To Central Coast & Carmel

Here We Come Fun! We have not found a better way to relax than to just “press pause” for a few days. We find three days is the perfect number. We can easily book Riley at the dog-sitter for a short stay, we don’t have to make a hundred phone calls or reservations and our refrigerator does not need to be emptied. We just lock up the house and go! And best of all, this seems to get us out of our routine. We do not have all the distractions, errands and projects that...

Temecula… There’s More Than Just Wine In The Valley!

It was a lovely sunny morning as a group of So Cal writers recently visited Temecula. The Mount Palomar Winery was established in 1969. This winery has deep roots in this valley, and responding to their kind invitation, the International Food Wine and Travel Writers Association (IFWTWA) set up camp right there. Perched high atop the valley below, we marveled at the premier views from their restaurant Annata Bistro & Bar. The name Annata translates to "vintage"...

The World Is At Your Fingertips at Melissa’s Produce

Melissa’s World Variety Produce company does it all in the world of fresh produce. They sources the items from 40 different countries, purchase the items, distribute them, and sell them wholesale and retail.  This includes a staggering number of fruits and vegetables from all over the world.  They are the largest distributor of specialty produce in the United States. But as we learned on a recent visit to the warehouse in Vernon, CA, it is so much more.  Melissa’s really celebrates...

Wine Exchange Offers Premium Wines & Mega-Selection

Sometimes we have a media event which unexpectedly coincides with a major announcement. On this fine March Saturday, it was just such a day. We were meeting with Best Wines partners Kyle Meyer and Tristen Beamon, to hear all about their vino business. Our group included members of the International Food Wine & Travel Writers Association (IFWTWA), and the day was planned by our esteemed President Linda Kissam. Little did we know they had just announced they were “on the move”!  Best...

FROM FARM TO YOU…. IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD!

On a recent media event in Temecula, CA we had the pleasure of learning all about how this company is bringing fresh grown produce and culinary delights directly to consumers.  Sadly, since I live in Orange County,  I do not get to take advantage of these incredible programs, but if you are reading this article,  and reside in Temecula, or North County San Diego, boy are YOU in for a treat! The parent company is Cultivating Good. That is the main company, and under that are three...

Diamond Jamboree—A Collection of Authentic Asian Dining Venues….And So Much More!

This center really is a GEM. And I do not use that term lightly. With just over 30 various businesses---this corner of Alton Parkway and Jamboree Road in Irvine is bustling with activity from early morning to late in the evening.  This is a haven for the Asian community---a place where they can enjoy cuisine reminiscent of their homeland, and share it with family and friends. It is also a perfect spot for me to locate “hard-to-find” Asian ingredients to make my fanciful creations at...
